How to Enjoy Restorative Yoga at Home

Restorative Yoga is one of the great “time-in” practices of yoga. We get to deeply rest into a series of completely supported yoga poses, allowing our bodies and minds a period of peaceful stillness amidst the chaos of the world around us. This practice becomes an instant stress buster by releasing tensions in the muscles and joints, by stimulating the relaxation response, and by giving the immune system a boost.

Essential to Restorative Yoga is discovering how to fully support the body so that deep, nourishing relaxation can be cultivated. In the studio setting, we use yoga props to create the support we need. For many of us, however, the Zoom Room has become our yoga studio and the array of props we once had at hand are no longer available. What to do?

You can create a beautiful Restorative Yoga environment with items you already have at home!

Setting Up Your Space (tending to your senses):

Restorative yoga props can include a folding chair, towels, washcloths, pillows, blankets and candles. Cat optional.
  • Distractions – set your cell phone on “do not disturb"; close the door; pets optional.

  • Warmth – make sure the room is warm enough. The body will cool down, so wear layers to accommodate temperature changes.

  • Lighting – it’s nice to be in low light, perhaps using the fireplace or candles.

  • Aroma – if you enjoy aromatherapy, select a calming scent or blend; burn incense.

  • Sound – if you would like music during your practice, a soothing instrumental playlist, sounds of nature, or a mantra chanting soundtrack are recommended. During workshops, participants will be muted during practice with instructions offered in a quiet background.
